Kinja'd!!!

I shall be dispensing my unusual wealth of Porsche knowledge with everyone from time to time! Use it in social gatherings, dates, as an icebreaker! Today’s facts are about the 996.

Did you know the 996 Turbo was the first car in the world to be sold with Bi-Xenon headlamps as standard ?

Did you know that the 996's M96 Engine is the first 911 engine to not have dry-sump lubrication?

Kinja'd!!!

That’s all for today!

Did you know the M96 was the first engine in a 911 to have a single catastrophic point of failure?

I never realized all the old air cooled engines were dry sumped.

Wrong date, try again. Or you can use my useful Titanic fun facts!

Did you know Titanic had approximately 10,726 light bulbs? And that third class’s toilets featured automatic flushing?

Cylinder 6.

“There seems to be a design flaw that the coolant is not circulating well in the this part of the engine. 6th cylinder is on the right side bank, closest to the cabin. The high temperature issue is local and therefore you cannot see the problem on the temperature gauge. You are unaware of the overheating in 6th cylinder until you start to hear some rattling from the engine. This means the cylinder has lost its surface layer, the cylinder is scratched and the piston clucks in the cylinder. This also means this cylinder is now burning oil. As the exhaust pipes are in X-shape, the exhaust gases from right side of the engine exit through the left side exhaust pipe. Oil residue starts to build up on the rear bumper above the exhaust pipe end. You now need a new block, or the 6th cylinder machined and a sleeve inserted.”

To be fair, I don’t think this issue is nearly as serious or prevalent as the IMS bearing. And even that can be blown out of proportion.

Well that’s a shame.  I’ve heard of scoring issues, but they don’t seem super prevalent either.

Kinja'd!!!1

Nope! Because it was worried that third class passengers wouldn’t know how to flush a toilet, or that they wouldn’t know they had to and that would’ve been nasty.

tl;dr: They believed third class to be uncultured philistines who couldn’t flush a toilet.

I’m pretty sure this is how flynorcals block went; some sort of 6th cylinder issue.

You don’t hear much about the scoring and sleeve frag issues because the IMS grenades the engine long before you hit those.

It may be more prevalent in the M97.  I recall when I was investigating buying a Cayman, one of the areas all the Porschephiles said to make sure the PPI checked out was borescoping the cylinders.

Yeah, there’s also a dirty rumor going around that I’m starting to learn how to do truly horrific things to the 9A1 . Since literally nobody is doing anything meaningful with it. Possibly because they don’t know DI , more likely because it’s the fucking 9A1- 100- 90 1- 06 engine .

So, uh, yeah. Don’t damage the internals on a 997.2 GTS.

Kinja'd!!!0

Is that right? What dirty things does this rumor say? Also no one calls it by the part number, 9A1 is fine?

Also, don’t damage the internals on any 997.2 and 991.1?

Kinja'd!!! Spamfeller Loves Nazi Clicks > K-Roll-PorscheTamer

Oh, just that some guy named Woot Rim or something like that noticed that the 991.1 Turbo S increased the HP side to 2000PSI without changing the cam drive from the 997.2 9A1. Also that he noticed it’s gear-drive and not push-drive and mumbled something about large flow gains through de-restricting internal stuff.

But nobody would ever want more fuel to go with the 10mm larger diameter throttle body they bolted on, right?

Unfortunately, no. You can blow up all the 991.1's you want, because that engine is still available. But according to Porsche, also different enough to not fit the 997.2 because of course.
